Welding competition Details

Each school with be allowed to enter the following:

 

Sign up deadline is Monday Nov 14.  This contest is for 9th through 12th grade only

 

3 SMAW competitors, 3 GMAW competitors, and 1 combination competitor from each school. Competitors can sign up for just one category.

 

If competitors are not following safe practices they will be asked to stop the competition and will forfeit their opportunity to continue in the competition or have their welds judged. 

 

Needs from FFA advisors: It would be great if we could have participation from the FFA advisors for helping time the events and get completed projects into judging rooms. Also monitoring safety for welders will be a top priority. We may be able to rotate advisors in and out so being able to see our welders, shops, etc is possible.  We will also need a liability waiver signed by a guardian or parent for all students under 18.   You will get these after you sign up above.

Competition: Students will be required to bring all necessary PPE for their competition. Hood with correct lens, long sleeves, pants, proper boots, safety glasses, needle nose or welpers(GMAW and combo specific.) Chipping hammers and wire brushes are recommended to bring but we may be able to provide these to some competitors. 

 

SMAW: This competition the student will receive a previously tack welded part and will be required to place the proper weld in the correct location. Anticipate 3F fillet welds with 7018 and 6011, 2F multipass welds with 7018 and 6011, anticipate lap joints with 7018 and 6011. A 30 minute timer will start as soon as the competitor is in the booth. 

 

GMAW:  This competition the student will receive a previously tack welded part and will be required to place the proper weld in the correct location. Anticipate setting machines for proper steel thickness with .035 dia ER70s. Anticipate 3F Tee and Lap welds as well as 2F Tee and Lap welds. A 30 minute timer will start as soon as the competitor is in the booth. 

 

Combo: This competition students will receive loose material and will be required to assemble and weld out according to a simple blueprint. There could be lap joints, tee joints, and butt joints possible using 7018, 6011, GMAW Short arc, and GTAW on steel. A 1 hour and 20 minute timer will start as soon as the competitor is in the booth.

Prizes:  More details of the prizes will be posted soon but will include Welders, Welding Hoods, Jackets and gloves and a team prize for the winning school to help improve your classroom shop.

Location, Date and Time:

The Welding Competition will be held at Linn Benton Community College at 6500 Pacific Blvd. Albany, OR on Wednesday November 16, 2022 from 9 AM to Noon.

Please arrive early and meet at the CTE Plaza.  Bus Parking will be in the North Parking Lot.

A free lunch will be provided at the Willamette Ag Expo and the award presentation will be there.  Lunch will begin at 12:30 in the Santiam building
